There are so many Portuguese verbs and prepositions, but it’s very difficult to know which to use when talking about bank accounts, health insurance plans, university programs, and more.  Let’s figure out ways to translate inscrever, matricular, cadastrar, and other verbs.

to enroll / an enrollment

You can enroll in a language course at any time.  The school offers open enrollment.

You need to be enrolled at a university for a minimum of six credits to qualify for a transit pass with a student discount.

I used to be enrolled in a basic health plan, but after getting married, I enrolled in my insurance provider’s family plan.

You should enroll in your bank’s overdraft protection program to avoid fees whenever you exceed your account’s available balance.

to sign-up  / a sign-up / to register / a registration

January is the worst time to sign-up for a new gym membership.  Everyone wants to start the year by getting in shape and gyms are not desperate for new customers..

Credit card companies often target college campuses as a lucrative way to sign-up young inexperienced customers.  Their salespeople earn a signing bonus for every new sign-up.

Sign-up before June 1st and we will waive your enrollment fee!

to matriculate / matriculation

Only 95 percent of those who receive letters of acceptance to Harvard University go on to matriculate.  Don’t cry for the other 5 percent, they often have applied to, been accepted by, and go on to matriculate at other elite universities.

The rate of matriculation for working adults at language schools continues to rise as the demand for bilingual businessmen and women grows.

an exception (patterns, normal behavior)   / an exemption (laws / written rules)

Our offices close at 5PM, but we can make an exception if you arrive before 5:30.

The exemption covers any enrollment made prior to June 1st, so yes, you will be exempt if we receive your application on May 31st..

a location / a branch / a campus

The gym’s premium plan will allow you to use any location in the city.  Under the basic plan, you can only use the location where you first enrolled.
